Sorry for the grainy photo—my phone is nearing retirement age!
I wasn’t planning to send out a newsletter this week, as Archer’s mom and I have been feeling a bit worn out. However, Archer’s wonderful Aunties, who have been our rock during this time, sent us a heartwarming video that’s just too adorable not to share. Make sure you have your sound on—it's bound to bring a smile to your face!
I’m incredibly grateful for Archer’s Aunties and grandmother, whose help has been invaluable to us. We genuinely could not have done this without them
Archers Current Condition
Tomorrow, Archer’s mom and I are heading back to the hospital. We’re pleased to share that Archer has gained about 150-200 grams since his E.coli infection and now weighs 6.2 kg (13.6 lbs).
Why Is Archer Still in the Hospital? When Will He Be Home?
Here, the approach to treating short bowel syndrome differs from what’s typical in the Western world. Instead of sending patients home shortly after reconnection surgery, they only wait days (not week/months) after the dead portion of the bowel has been removed before reconnecting. They then keep patients in the hospital until they reach 10 kg (22 lbs), which usually takes around two years. This extended hospital stay helps reduce the risk of infection, as recovery from such major surgery can take up to a year and the immune system strengthens over time.
Yes we wish we could take Archer home with us and I semi-joke about kidnapping my own son regularly, but we’re more than happy to wait a bit longer if it means ensuring his safety and well-being.
Thank you all for your continued support and love. Knowing that people are following our child’s journey provides us with an incredible source of strength.
Neil, keep these heart warming - and often heart breaking moments coming. It helps us feel connected to your journey!
